Beschreibung

Foundational Role in Logic and Analytic Philosophy Frege invented modern logic. His Begriffsschrift (1879) introduced quantifiers and a formal system that laid the groundwork for predicate logic—far superior to Aristotle’s syllogistics. This was the essential tool Russell and others used to build analytic philosophy. Without Frege’s formal logic, there is no Principia Mathematica (Russell & Whitehead). Russell’s theory of descriptions and work in logic were direct responses to Frege’s system. Russell’s “Overcoming” Was Partial Yes, Russell discovered a paradox (Russell's Paradox) in Frege’s system, which shook the foundations of Frege’s logicism. But this didn’t invalidate Frege’s importance—it actually highlighted it. Frege was working at such a high level that his system had to be scrutinized and improved. Frege’s mistake wasn't stupidity—it was being too early in a field that barely existed. Russell admired Frege deeply; their correspondence shows this clearly. Reading Frege is like reading Newton in physics. Einstein “overcame” Newton, but you can’t understand Einstein without Newton. Frege wasn’t a detour—he was the path.
